Reigning champions: Alessandro Durante and Giovanni Ficarra (Italy)
Entries: 4
Just 4 boats in this event, Hungary, Israel, Italy and Moldova. The Hungarians, Kalman Furko and Bence Szabo, are the most experienced – they won the European Championships in 2021 and 2022 and also have silver from the World Championships last year. The LM2- has only been raced once this season, at the Varese World Cup and the Hungarians took the silver medal.
Winners in Varese were the Italians, Francesco Bardelli and Stefano Pinsone. They are a young pairing and have U23 silver medals in this boat class from both 2022 and 2023.
Israel has two relatively inexperienced athletes, Cal Gabriel Gorvy and Daniel Dubitsky. 20-year-old Gorvy makes his international debut in Belgrade and Dubitsky makes his senior debut after racing in the BLM1X at this year’s U23 World Championships (where he finished 18th).
Moldova also has two young athletes in their pair, 20-year-old Nichita Naumciuc and 23-year-old Dmitrii Zincenco. This pair raced together at the U23 World Championships last season where they placed fifth.
Predictions: Not a particularly strong field, and with all lightweight events being removed from the Olympic programme after the Paris Olympics it remains to be seen how long events like this one can continue in the World Championship programme. Hungary in gold with Italy in silver and Moldova in bronze.
