A small but interesting field, the schoolboy double sculls at this year’s NSW All Schools Championships may well show which of these schoolboy sculling programs has the best depth.
Cranbrook
Martin and Mann double up from Cranbrook’s first quad and may well be a severe challenge at the major medals in this event. In a field without many other first quad rowers, Cranbrook may look to take their opportunity without the best of Kinross and Hunter Valley Grammar, and put an end to this race early if they can.
Hunter Valley Grammar
Davies and Jones, two rowers from Hunter Valley’s second quad and first eight, should be solid additions to this field. They might even show the depth Hunter Valley needs to succeed in big boats. If they can rise to the top of the field here, Hunter Valley will be looking at a solid regatta performance.
Kinross Wolaroi
Tancred and Condon emerge from last season’s second quad as A-Finalists and serious threats to this event. Their fourth place in the schoolboy quad sprint also suggests they are talented, as any entry from Kinross Wolaroi would suggest. Look for them to be aggressive off the start.
St Augustines
Wise and Pender are two of the few from this field who hail from their school’s first quad, and since it’s St Augustine’s first boat, we should all be looking at this double as one designed to chase medals. Although both will be kept very busy on the day – entered in four events – the quality of these athletes will hold this double up as one to beat.
Prediction
While there are entries from seven different schools here, the field will likely split in two. St Augustines and Kinross will contest the front of the pack, with Cranbrook and Hunter Valley likely close behind. The rest of the field will look to stick as close to the race leaders as possible and may surprise us – the double sculls is as unpredictable an event as it gets at NSW All Schools. The question remains, however, who has the depth and the quality to make every race a medal contender. The answer will give us our podium in this schoolboy double sculls event.
