2024 World Rowing Under 19 Championships – Great Britain Women’s Pair Preview

Having not put out a women’s pair at last years U19 world championships it shows the array of talent that has been presented to the coaching team for them to have chosen to include another boat type. The senior women’s pair came sixth in the B-final at this year’s Olympic games yet I’m sure the coaches and the rowers in this boat will be hoping to pick up at least an A final finish.

Annabelle Thornton – Sir William Perkin’s School (J17)

Having got her first taste of international racing last year at the GB-France J16 match, Annabelle Thornton has gone from strength to strength competing at the Munich International Junior Regatta before her worlds team placement. A bronze medal winner at the National Schools’ Regatta in the championship double sculls, she has swapped out the two sculling blades for a single sweeping blade. This clearly shows her strength overall as an athlete and someone who will be an important contribution to the boat.

Penny Irvine – Aberdeen Schools’ Rowing Association (J18)

A gold medalist in the championship coxed four at the National Schools’ Regatta, Penny Irvine has earned a seat on the world’s team in her final year as a junior rower. Her victory in the Groton School Challenge Trophy at Henley Women’s Regatta further solidifies her reputation as a top rower in the junior circuit. With proven skill in the pair, demonstrated by her win at the Scottish Championships, she is poised to be a vital asset to this crew.
