One of the premier events in schoolgirl rowing is the quad. The long history of female rowers who have competed in this event is significant in building an expectation for the girls competing. This year’s field seems to have a clear favourite amongst them, but, as we all know, anything can happen on the day in rowing. The crew from Canberra Girls Grammar School have been hot favourites from the first strokes of the season. Despite this, the girls from Gippsland Grammar and Radford College will be looking to ruin the undefeated season for the girls from the nation’s capital
Canberra Girls Grammar School (ACT)
What a season these girls are having! Heavy favourites from the start of the season, this crew, led by returning members Emily Walker and Isabel King, doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon, and will certainly be aiming to keep the ball rolling going into the Australian Rowing Championships. This crew’s key victories came from the Schoolgirl Head of the River, NSW State Championships, and the IGSA Regatta. These were races where they achieved comfortable victories and led from start to finish. These girls are the heavy favourites coming into the regatta.
Gippsland Grammar (VIC)
A proud rowing program located in rural Victoria, Gippsland has produced great rowers, such as Paige Barr OLY, who stroked the women’s eight at the Paris Olympic Games. So far, the school has had a successful season, placing third at the NSW State Championships and taking home the win in the Victorian Head of the Schoolgirls. They will look to take some momentum from their win at Head of the Schoolgirls into Nationals. Having three returning members in their crew, April Harrison, Scarlett Tavasci and cox Lucy Hodges, these girls certainly have what it takes to cause an upset.
Mosman/Northern Beaches Secondary
This crew won silver in the coxed quad at NSW State Championships and, with one crew change, also won gold in the u19 coxless quad, beating Canberra Girls into second place at the same event.
Prediction
Unless things go horribly wrong, Canberra Girls Grammar will take the gold medal. Mosman/Northern Beaches Secondary looks set to take out second place, and I would predict Gippsland Grammar to sneak their way onto the podium.
