Head of the Charles 2024 – Open Championship Singles Preview

As the Head of the Charles Regatta approaches, we look forward to an exciting showdown between some of the sport’s most decorated athletes. While most of these rowers are coming off the recent Olympic cycle, and thus not in peak form, the field remains incredibly competitive, with talent and experience running deep. Here are our athletes to watch out for.

Philip Doyle – Belfast Rowing Club

Leading the charge is Philip Doyle of Belfast Rowing Club, holding Bow number 1. Doyle, who secured a bronze medal in the men’s double sculls at the Paris Olympics, boasts an astonishing 2k time of 5:51.1, which is likely the fastest in this category. His power and boatmanship will make him the one to watch, as he pushes the limits in this highly demanding race.

Paul O’Donovan – Skibbereen Rowing Club

Ireland’s rowing legend, Paul O’Donovan, will race with Bow number 3. Representing Skibbereen Rowing Club, O’Donovan is a double Olympic champion and one of the fastest lightweight rowers ever, being the third in history to break the sub-6-minute mark in the 2k. His unmatched determination and sense of sportsmanship have made him a global icon in the sport. But the question remains: will his post-Olympic form be sharp enough to conquer the Charles, especially in the forecast headwind?

Javier Garcia Ordonez – Club Nautico Sevilla

Spain’s Javier Garcia Ordonez enters the fray with Bow number 4. Coming off a 5th-place finish in the pair at the Paris Olympics, Ordonez is the only sweep rower in this group. As an athlete based at Seville’s high-performance centre, traveling the longest distance to Boston might add an extra challenge. Nevertheless, his experience in international racing and his ability to adapt could make him a dark horse in this field.

Fintan McCarthy – Skibbereen Rowing Club

In Bow number 5, we have Fintan McCarthy, another double Olympic champion from Skibbereen Rowing Club. McCarthy has made waves in recent Irish regattas, where he’s shown himself to be slightly faster in the single than his compatriot O’Donovan. The teammate rivalry might push both Irishmen to deliver close to their best performances, despite being fresh off the Olympic circuit.

Elliot Putman – New York Athletic Club

Finally in Bow number 6, Elliot Putman brings a familiar edge to the race. As the only athlete in this group with previous experience on the Charles River, Putman has placed 3rd and 2nd in the last two editions of the Championship Singles. Coached by Michael Martinov from New York Athletic Club, Putman’s familiarity with the notoriously tricky course could play a significant role in his performance. His local knowledge might give him the upper hand over some of his more decorated competitors, highlighting the uniqueness of this event.

Prediction

With 4 out of the 5 athletes coming off their Olympic campaigns, there’s a certain levelling of the playing field, which could open the door for competitors like Javier Garcia Ordonez and Elliot Putman to capitalise upon. Whether it’s Doyle’s raw power, Putman’s course knowledge, or the O’Donovan-McCarthy teammate rivalry, the Head of the Charles is set for a thrilling contest between some of the best rowers in the world.
