Based on the River Dee, Aberdeen Schools RA is a rowing club for juniors, which has risen to prominence on the junior rowing circuit. The club was founded in 1973, and their current boathouse was opened in 2001. It is a club focused on junior rowing, allowing athletes to be members until they are nineteen before progressing in their rowing careers. The goal of this club since being founded is to form a powerful Junior squad that can represent Aberdeen’s rowing capabilities across the many British regattas and rowing events.
The club facilitates rowing at all levels allowing the choice between the more competitive nature of the sport or a slightly more recreational approach and anywhere in the middle depending on the athlete. Aberdeen Schools RA coaches in both sweep and sculling technique allowing a whole rowing experience to be taken by the athletes. Alongside water sessions, the club also offers strength and conditioning sessions to its athletes.
Aberdeen Schools RA recently saw many successes from their athletes at a range of virtual races across 2020. In the Scottish indoor championships, by the end of the event, Aberdeen Schools RA finished with fourteen podium place events, five of which were gold showing a solid effort and performance put out by the entire club. The club then saw one athlete continue their strong performances in the British Rowing Online Indoor Championships, placing within the top 10 for both events entered.
Alongside their recent successes, the club also has a long-standing successful history and has produced many strong athletes over the years. The club has made Scottish Rowing Crew of the Year at the Scottish Rowing Awards of 2018/19, comprised Abigail Topp and Megan Hewison. They went on to represent GB in the women’s pair at the 2019 Junior World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. Other alumni also include Miles Beeson, who was named Junior rower of the year in the Scottish Rowing Awards of 2018/19 who, as well as producing many strong performances for his club, has also competed for GB in the 2018 Junior World Championships in Racine, Czech Republic.
