Bedford Regatta will take place on Saturday the 11th of May and the Women’s J18 Quads have six entries. Although it is one of the smaller events of regatta season, it is still one that many look forward to every year. The race runs over 1200m through the centre of the town.
Great Marlow School Boat Club
Great Marlow School has had many commendable results in sculling over the last few seasons. Most recently, their women’s J18 quad placed sixth at Wallingford Regatta and tenth at the Junior Sculling Regatta in the same category. Considering none of the crews that beat them last weekend are competing at Bedford, if they can perform to that same standard with perhaps slightly less competition they stand a good chance of winning.
Bedford Modern School Boat Club
Bedford Modern School has two entries in this category, demonstrating the depth of their squad. At the Junior Sculling Regatta, their ‘Brock’ quad placed 12th, just a few places behind Great Marlow School. If the crew lineup remains the same, this suggests that they will also be one of the top contenders at their home regatta.
Bedford Rowing Club
Another home crew, Bedford Rowing Club recently placed first and third in the women’s junior 18 quads at Bedford spring head in April and first in the women’s junior 18 doubles at the same event. If they can complete a side-by-side race with the same proficiency, they should do well this weekend.
Predictions
A name like Great Marlow School doesn’t go unnoticed on the draw, and for good reason. I predict them to place first, perhaps a slightly larger programme with some more experience. Then leaving the two home crews to battle it out, Bedford Rowing Club look like they might just come ahead of Bedford Modern School but on regatta day, like we all know too well by now, anything can happen.
