Third in the LDS series this year is Berwick Long Distance Sculls. The cancellation of Tees LDS means that this will be only the second time these crews have raced in the series. With the northerly location of Berwick (only 3 miles from the Scottish Border) and entries capped at 70 for a solitary division, large junior numbers were never going to be attainable, not to mention clashing with Brit Champs for any 1 year juniors seeking U23 representation-this means no junior men’s quads have been entered. A ‘long’ 5000m course, the Tweed poses many challenges for scullers, including the tidal nature of the river.
Junior Men’s Doubles
J18 2x- Two entries here, one Durham School, and one Durham School/Talkin Tarn composite. The composite looks the stronger of the two doubles, even though it is a J16 combination. After a successful season in the J15 4X+ last year, they should be pushing on. The other Durham School boat is a J18 boat, but is an unknown hand after neither of these two raced last year. Nevertheless, the preseason tour to South Africa could have worked wonders.
J16 2x- Three entries here, all from Durham School. One of these doubles is from the aforementioned J15A 4X+, and the other two entries are from the J15B 4X+ quad, thus meaning the result of this should be straightforward, but as always, the result can always change on the day.
Junior Men’s Singles
J18 1x- Two entries, one from Berwick, one from Tyne. The former has course knowledge, but what appears to be limited race experience, the other has plenty of race experience, and the fastest time at Tyne Single Scullers head. My money is on the man from Tyne.
J16 2x- Again two entries, one from Tyne, one from Chester Le Street. After the performance from Cleugh from Chester Le Street at Tyne LDS, I’m backing him for the win.
