British Rowing Junior and Senior Club Championships 2024 – Women’s Club Quads Preview

The newly merged British Rowing Junior and Senior Club Championships will debut this weekend at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham, one of the UK’s premier venues for side-by-side racing. Over the course of three days, rowers from all over Britain will extend their season in pursuit of the coveted title of British Champions. So, which clubs are vying for victory in the Women’s Club Quads? Let’s dive in…

Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club
Starting in Scotland, the Clydesdale ARC boat will feature experienced scullers Rebecca Setford and Nina Oehlckers. This accomplished duo has previously raced the double for their club at both the Scottish Rowing Championships and Henley Women’s Regatta in the championship category. Setford and Oehlckers will be aiming to make Scotland proud as they trek down to Nottingham with their sights set on bringing home the gold. With their proven track record, they are poised to be strong contenders in the competition.

Bedford Rowing Club/Bedford Star
Hailing from the River Ouse, Bedford Rowing Club will be sending two crews, including the notable duo Swift and Brittan, who have competed together at Henley Masters and other regattas this season. A third crew, entered under the alias Bedford-Star—a virtual club that allows composite teams from Bedford RC and Star RC to compete as one—will feature Moore and White. This pair previously rowed for Star RC at Women’s Henley in the Rosie Mayglothing Trophy, narrowly missing qualification in the second most popular event of the weekend.

Norwich Rowing Club
Heading east to the gold and green of Norwich Rowing Club, based on the River Yare, we find their well-trained Henley Women’s Regatta crew gearing up for Nottingham. Despite their best efforts, this crew fell short of qualifying for the Chairman’s Trophy in a highly competitive field. They faced tough competition and unfortunately missed out on the chance to advance. Now, with renewed determination and a drive to succeed, they are looking to make a comeback in this event. Will this be their moment of redemption? Only time will tell…

Nottingham Rowing Club
The hometown heroes, Nottingham Rowing Club, will be showcasing a dynamic combination of talent. The Beaumont duo will be swapping one blade for two, transitioning from the coxless four they competed in at Henley to demonstrate their versatility in sculling. Additionally, Jen Titterington will be joining them, bringing her experience from the Princess Royal Challenge Cup at Henley Royal, where she competed in her single. This impressive lineup highlights the depth and adaptability of Nottingham RC, promising an exciting performance on their home waters.

Leeds Rowing Club
Representing Yorkshire, Leeds Rowing Club will be making the journey south to Nottingham, eager to showcase their regional pride. Their crew features H Bentley, who competed in the women’s aspirational single at Henley Women’s Regatta and was tantalised with the chance of qualification, missing out by just 0.1 of a second. Leeds RC will bring their resilience and competitive spirit to the Nottingham event, aiming to turn near misses into triumphs.

Notable mentions

Other competitors include Newark Rowing Club, a Midlands-based rowing club known for consistently fielding strong sculling crews, as well as Warrington Rowing Club from the northwest and Mersey Rowing Club.

Predictions

Huge kudos to everyone who has extended their season to compete in this newly revitalised national event. Expect a fierce battle for gold on the day, particularly between hometown favourites Nottingham and the Scottish challengers from Clydesdale – the rest truly is all to play for.
