With Henley Blues now turning into summer tans, attention turns to the last major regatta of the season. The British Rowing Junior Championships allows crews to showcase all their fine tuning for the season and this year will be no different. A record entry will see the National Watersports Centre transformed into a sporting spectacle. The Junior Eights will has four entries from all across the country racing in what should be a hotly contested final.
Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association
This Scottish Pocket Rocket of a Club is one that consistently churns our outstanding performances on a national stage despite having a squad which is far smaller than some of the big English schools. After strong results throughout the season in fours as well as encouraging racing against Edinburgh University at the Scottish Championships, The boys from the granite city should be expecting to end this season on a high with a win this weekend.
Tideway Scullers School & Walton R.C.
After qualifying four quads for the Fawley Challenge Cup between them, TSS and Walton have combined forces to try their hands at sweep. It’s unlikely for composites to come together unless they have the potential to be quick. And I expect this crew to be just that. Given Walton’s sweep pedigree and the depth of TSS I envisage this composite crew to have a real barn burner of a race with ASRA.
Magdalen School
It will be interesting to see what kind of speed this crew can find given they did not race the eight at Dorney back in May. Two quads were raced but they failed to find any speed that would challenge the top end quads such as those from TSS and Walton.
Cantabrigian
Cantabs were racing at NSR in a crew that finished middle of the D Final. As such, it is unlikely that they will have the speed to match TSS and ASRA.
My prediction…ASRA & the composite crew 1-2
