British Rowing Junior Championships 2019 – Women’s Junior Pairs

As the season comes to a close the athletes will be looking for a final opportunity to medal this year. This event has 15 strong crews entered with the likes of Henley Rowing Club, Glasgow Academy, Nottingham and Union, St Pauls Girls and Walton Rowing Club racing this weekend. Some of the most competitive crews entered are Henley Rowing Club, Glasgow Academy and St Paul’s Girls and so we expect these clubs to be competing for the top places.

Henley Rowing Club

The stroke seat of this pair has had a successful year with development from a 4th place in the J16 4x- at National Schools’ Regatta to representing GB in the GB v France as they qualified as the fastest J16 4x-. However, this athlete is racing up and in a sweep event after having predominately sculled this year so it will be interesting to see how she fairs in a J18 event.

Glasgow Academy

This club has often seen success in the pairs events as they have been selected as the J16 pair for the GB v France match for the past two years. This club has three crews entered: one of these crews was this year’s J16 pair at the GB v France match whilst one of the two other crews competed last year. The depth of this squad is clearly seen through their numerous entries and so it will be interesting to see the results for this club.

St Paul’s Girls

This crew has been consistently competing for the top places this year at some of the biggest regattas. They narrowly missed out on a medal at National Schools’ as they finished in 4th place. This will have been a motivating experience for the crew and so it will be interesting to see whether their experience as a combination and there development since this regatta will help them to finish the season with a medal.

We expect to see the likes of Henley Rowing Club, Glasgow Academy and St Paul’s Girls competing for the top three medals. Glasgow Academy look to have the depth of squad to come out on top in this category. However, who claims the medals will be entirely down to the athletes’ abilities and perseverance throughout the day of racing.
