British Rowing Junior Championships 2022 – Junior 18 Men’s Pairs Preview

British Junior Rowing Championships or BRITchamps is the last big race on the calendar and for some is a nostalgia moment, being the old venue for NATschools before it moved south. Due to its location, it draws a massive variety of crews from all around the country with crews from the south and the north making the trek to Nottingham in order to compete with the best. Unfortunately, due to it being a regular season this year, we will not see a lot if any school crews, however, there is still some hot competition, and with the weather conditions this weekend it will be a test of every element of not only a crews racing strategy, but also their ability off the water.

Hinksey Sculling School – (HIN) – (B. McCaughan , A. Gillet):

Hinksey Sculling School is a boat club that while established hasn’t been at the top of the table in terms of performance, however, This crew has proven that this club has the pedigree to do well, and has shown a very tenacious attitude. Having won at national schools this year by 10 seconds, this crew will want to cement a victory here in order to get the double and maybe set a course record, I would keep an eye on this crew.

Great Marlow School – (GMS) – (H.Gavin , H.Loretto):

Great Marlow School is another boat club that is an underdog, but has also produced quite an impressive crew, they were able to hold onto Hinskey until the 1000m meter marker and being slightly slower in the 1500m, there is a strong likelihood that they would have learnt from this and will be able to correct there racecraft and should give Hinksey a run for their money and should be hungry for a win, the race between this two should be good.

Kingston Grammar School – (KGS) – (A.Middleton, A.Currie):

Kingston Grammar School is a new boat club that isn’t used to the success of other school boat clubs and is one of the few school boat clubs competing at Brit champs this year. However, they have had quite a successful year having this crew come 3rd at National Schools this year, this crew will want to now be able to hold onto their position and push to be in the top 2 this time round, having had at least 2 months since NAT’s they should be in a stronger and more competitive position then before.

Other Crews:

There are some other significant crews such asMossbourne – (MOS) – (D.Shaw, C.Adams)  (58). Mossbourne is another good club that will bring quite a challenge for the top 10 crews. .  Notting Country Rowing Assocation[NCRA] – (NCR) – (A.Knighton, J,Edgar), NCR Always bring a challenge to the table and are able to bring some quite fast crews, having been quite successful this year, they some lessons before Henley. Pangbourne Colledge – (PAN) – (R.Robson, H.Green), Pangbourne is another very impressive boat club that has incredible facilities and resources and has the ability to bring a fast and competent crew together, they will be a crew to watch.

My Predictions are:

  1. Hinksey Sculling School – (HIN) – (B. McCaughan , A. Gillet)
  2. Great Marlow School – (GMS) – (H.Gavin , H.Loretto)
  3. Kingston Grammar School – (KGS) – (A.Middleton, A.Currie)
