Fortune favours the bold. Make no mistake, to come and race Newcastle on the Tyne in lightweight fours is a very bold decision. It’s a gauntlet that Edinburgh have picked up this year, their quartet find themselves sandwiched between two Newcastle fours in what is a three boat affair over the long course on Saturday.
Newcastle University BC
Newcastle needs no introduction when it comes to lightweight rowing. They’ve dominated the scene for at least five seasons and their depth has been unmatched, particularly when they have been able to have two eights finish in the top four at BUCS Regatta. Across the two fours entered, they have seven returners and three of their top four won gold in this category at BUCS Regatta and going on to win a round at Henley Royal. The four also features Israeli athlete, Daniel Dubitsky who’ll be bringing some international flare to Newburn.
Edinburgh University BC
Edinburgh have some youth on their side, three freshers backing up BUCS gold medallist, Ben Frohburg. Edinburgh themselves also have a strong history in lightweight events thanks to the likes of Gavin Horsburgh, James Temble to name but a few. However, to take on the Blue Star on an away day will be a step to far for this unit.
Prediction
No one beats Newcastle in this event.
