BUCS Head 2022 – Women’s Intermediate Lightweight Quad Preview

BUCS Head is finally back again, and this year on the Tyne. With storm Eunice teasing many rowers with water time and races, we all hope that the race will go ahead with good weather. With four crews entered it will be a small field but all the more reason for them to compete hard knowing they are all in with a shot of winning.

Reading University BC

Over the years, Reading University has consistently had a strong lightweight squad, with recent athletes like Chloe Knight and Lara Brittain flying the Reading flag at the country’s biggest events. Indeed Lara Brittain is listed in this crew indicating it will be a quality outfit. Lauren Maddison competed at the recent GB finishing as the top U23 perhaps making her the top lightweight present at BUCS Head. With recent lightweight wins at Henley Women’s Regatta and BUCS, this crew are the favourites.

Surrey University BC

With the Kennedy twins trialing for the Great Britain squad back in November, this Surrey crew looks like it will be able to push Reading hard. It will be a strong quad and will have plenty of experience with racing in very competitive races.

Nottingham University BC

Not a stranger to competition in the lightweight events, Nottingham must be considered as a threat. Olivia Bates won the Women’s Lightweight Single at BUCS Regatta last year and competed in the GBRT first assessment in November, albeit for Nottinghamshire County RA, if she is part of this crew it is worth noting.

Prediction

Although, a lot of this is looking over previous races and entry lists from fours head, BUCS Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta, we can guarantee a strong category for the Women’s Lightweight Quad. The prediction would be Reading coming in first, then Surrey, with Nottingham coming in third. With windy and tidal conditions we wish the best of luck to all crews entered!
