BUCS Head 2023 – Women’s Championship Coxless Four Preview

It’s been a really exciting head season for the top women’s crews so far, with BUCS head one of the main events along with WeHORR that these athletes will have been focusing on over the winter months. With seven crews representing seven different universities the battle for the top spot looks set to be an interesting one.

University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh have historically been strong at BUCS head, medalling in the women’s champ eight, quad and coxed four last year. This event alluded them after they were forced to scratch. However, this year their coxless four took the win against many of the same clubs they’ll be up against at BUCS, so will head into it feeling confident they can put in a strong performance.

Durham University

Durham University were beaten into second. Their women’s squad have had a strong season so far, picking up wins at the Tyne New Year’s Head, and some good results at Rutherford Head prior to that. Although their top boat looks to be their coxed four rather than this category, one would still expect them to be competitive.

University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham took the win in this category in 2022 by an impressive 57 second margin last year and will be looking to replicate that this coming year. They’ll be up against some strong opposition and haven’t been as strong in women’s champ so far this season at events such as Rutherford and Quintin Head, but they can’t be written off.

Newcastle University

Newcastle University’s women’s squad have put in some solid performances recently and would expect to be among the top boats in this category for BUCS. Their coxless four came in behind crews from both Edinburgh and Durham at Rutherford Head, also having to play second fiddle to Durham’s top eight more recently at Tyne New Years Head, so they’ll be looking to close the gaps to their rivals.

Predictions

Edinburgh have been consistently strong this head season, and probably go into this event as favourites. Expect them to be closely chased by Durham, while Nottingham and Newcastle will be there should any of the favourites ahead of them falter.
