BUCS Head 2024 – Women’s Intermediate Coxed Fours Preview

For women’s intermediate coxed fours this year at BUCS Head, we have a total of 27 entires. Evenly split across many university clubs, this year will prove an interesting race. Intermediate as a category can hold a host of many abilities and all the women racing this weekend coming will be excited to get on the water.

Newcastle University Boat Club

With a large squad for both novices and seniors alike, Newcastle will have a strong boat coming into this event. At Rutherford Head, the squad won the women’s coxless four in both the B1 and B2 categories; in the coxed four category, the squad again nabbed a win in B2. With this success, local knowledge and experience of the river and the tides, they’re set for a good race.

Glasgow University Boat Club

Having won the women’s B1 coxed fours at Rutherford Head, and placing second in this category at BUCS Head last year, the girls will only want to build on their success ahead of the summer season.

University of Edinburgh Boat Club

Edinburgh saw plenty of racing on the Tyne at Rutherford Head. They came second to Newcastle in both the coxless and B2 coxed fours, and second to Glasgow in the B1 coxed fours. Edinburgh have so far been playing second-fiddle to their northern rivals; whether they can invert this trend remains to be seen.

University of St Andrews Boat club

Having come a strong fourth place at last year’s BUCS Head, the girls at Saint’s rowing will be keen to get a podium finish this year. Having recently taken the most wins at Inverness Head – beating the previous winners, Edinburgh – it is clear to see that Saint’s are on the rise and becoming ever more formidable on the water.

University of Surrey Boat Club

Having won this category this time last year, the women in the crew will only have their eye on the winning medal. Recently coming back from a post-Christmas training camp, Surrey will be ready to keep their spot at the top.

Predictions

Given the strong list of entries to this year’s event, it will be a tight race with mere seconds between crews as they come through the finish. I believe that this year Newcastle are looking the strongest for this event, closely followed by Glasgow and then Edinburgh. That’s not to say it won’t be close – conditions will be unpredictable. Best of luck ladies!
