BUCS Head 2025 – Women’s Intermediate Coxed Four Preview

As BUCS Head draws nearer for another year, the women in the Intermediate Coxed Fours are ready to make waves on the Tyne once again. With a range of crews from up and down the country, the standard and quality of racing is sure to impress.

University of Surrey

Coming off the back of a training block of winter sun in Seville, Surrey – who are last year’s winners of the category – will look to stay in the top end of the field. With an impressive end to the back end of last season, with a Frank V Harry Cup and two Cathy Cruickshank Trophy Qualifications, there is talent coming up through the ranks into the intermediate squad. Surrey finish consistently high in this category, and this year they will be hoping to continue the trend.

University of Glasgow

Finishing last year in a close second place, Glasgow will be sure to have found a drive to put themselves into that gold medal position. With their beginner coxed four winning at Scottish Championships last June and the intermediates placing third, the grassroots development will hopefully be seen in the crew, pushing them up into medalling positions once again.

University of Edinburgh

Another Scottish crew to feature in this preview, Edinburgh will be looking to improve on last year’s result and find their way into those top 3 positions. Following this success, the women’s squad won the Frank V Harry Cup at HWR for the second consecutive year, and these development athletes can only provide a depth of talent for this crew.

With an impressive performance at Rutherford Head, winning both Band 1 and 2, the squad shows promise for the coming season, and this performance on the Tyne puts them in good stead to tackle conditions that may be presented this weekend.

Newcastle University

Rowing on home water, Newcastle have an advantage few crews can boast – knowing the river – and after coming fifth at this event last year, the squad placed third at BUCS Regatta. Looking to the current season, the squad placed third at Rutherford Head, showing that they have continued to develop, and the women will want to close the gap to Edinburgh this weekend.

Predictions

With so many talented athletes in this category, the only thing that is certain is that there is undoubtedly going to be some tight racing this weekend. This race is the time that many crews can show off the hard work that they have put in during the winter months, and I believe that the top three spots will be in hot contention between Surrey, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
