BUCS Regatta 2022 – Women’s Intermediate Quad Preview

With approximately fifty crews entered into this division, it is one of the larger categories at BUCS Regatta and promises a wealth and variety of rowing talent. As there are so many entries, I’ve picked crews that I believe might feature in the A final in this incredibly competitive category.

Durham University BC

Having won the Women’s Victor Ludorum at BUCS Head 2022, it’s clear that Durham University are having an all-round strong season this far. This was particularly helped by the strength of their Women’s Intermediate Quad, who placed first earlier this year at BUCS Head. With that win in the bag, it’s likely that we will see Durham feature at the top of the results table for this regatta as well.

Newcastle University BC

Five seconds behind Durham, Newcastle University placed second in the Women’s Intermediate Quad at BUCS Head this year in a boat stroked by Emily Strange. This quad returns once again and I’m excited to see whether they will succeed in their chance at redemption and beat Durham. In addition to Strange’s boat, there are two other Newcastle boats, one of which likely placed third at BUCS Head behind Strange’s boat. The depth that Newcastle clearly has means that it’s likely we will be seeing two Newcastle boats in the A final.

Edinburgh University BC

Edinburgh University has had an incredibly successful year, having dominated the championship events at BUCS Head. Although their top quad in the intermediate category didn’t race at BUCS Head, if they’re anything like their championship counterparts, there might be some serious speed brought to the regatta.

Bath University BC

University of Bath University will prove to be an interesting quad to watch in this division. Having placed fourth at BUCS Head, there was a sizeable gap between their quad and third place. I’m excited to see if their Easter training has closed the gap between them and Newcastle and in doing so, bring them closer to the medals.

Prediction

Although there is quite a large gap between the four crews above and subsequent crews at BUCS Head, it is regatta season, and that means that it is all still to play for. I’m interested to see where Reading University and Liverpool University place as they usually have competitive quads. I’m excited to see how this divison will play out and whether there will be any surprises in the finals.
