As the weekend approaches there is much anticipation over who will be coming out on top this year in the girls championship singles, a highly competitive event. The category has a total of 44 entries, all of whom will be at the top of their game and are entered by some of the top schools and clubs across the country. Within the mix there is a real potential for some exciting and closely fought racing with the top five being listed below.
Fulham Reach
The girl’s squad at Fulham Reach have been producing strong results throughout this year in all areas of rowing with two members of the squad taking 2nd places at last seasons Junior Indoor Championships. However regarding the girl’s singles they are definitely a very strong contender this coming weekend. Some of their most recent successes include placing 3rd and 5th at the Junior Sculling Regatta earlier this season. With this promising result behind them it certainly puts them in the mix for placing top 3.
Molesey Boat Club
Dunford has had an impressive for last couple of years with her most recent win at Junior Sculling regatta a few weeks ago where she fought of tough competition. In addition to she was the winner of the 2017 SportsAid One-to-Watch Award and has just competed at the U23 trials. Over the previous years she has come third in the J16 sculls at the 2016 junior trials and has done consistently well in both single and double scull events, having taken first place at the World Junior Rowing Championships in the women’s double 2017 in addition to having three first place finishes at GB trials. I would think given the array of wins across the years Dunford is definitely the one to beat this weekend as she will be putting up some tough competition for the others in the category.
Shiplake College
The girls at Shiplake are always strong competitors in their field and will put up a strong race. Most recent success has arisen from Wallingford regatta where the took first place ahead of Thames, South African School’s and St Paul’s, all of whom are up there with some of the best.
St Paul’s Girls School Boat Club
St Paul’s are definitely in the running this year for a top three finish, after a successful year in both quads, doubles and singles the squad looks set to do well. With most recent successes at both Wallingford with a 4th place finish and Junior Sculling Regatta 6th place finish. They have certainly been setting the standard high for others to follow with a 6th place finish at the J16 1x at the 2016 Brit Champs, and 3rd place finish in the 2017 Scullers Head.
Thames Rowing Club
Thames rowing clubs senior girls have had an impressive season this year. At Junior Sculling Regatta both their singles placed in the top six with one coming 3rd and the other 5th both of which are exceptional results and show the strength of rowing running throughout their squad. The club are known to be highly competitive and have a rich history of results.
In addition to these clubs and schools above there are some potential outside contenders that could be seen in a top 5 finish. Bann rowing club were last years winners so although we haven’t seen any huge results from them so far they could surprise us all. A second entry which could creep into the main competition is Latymer Upper School whom are known for having a very strong boat club across the ages and so they have a high potential to achieve a really good result at the weekend.
I think that Dunford will take 1st place this year with a close follow-up from either Fulham Reach or Thames Rowing club in 2nd and 3rd place.
Good luck to all those going and enjoy the weekend!
