Such little can be told about crews when it is the start of a new season. With only three entries in this category, it is going to be great race down the course. The fact that all crews are starting close to one another where they can see each other, the winner may know who they are before the times are released.
King’s School Chester
Chester did not field any sculling boats at NSR last year, and they probably will not spend their entire season in the quad. Despite this, the crew consists of a silver medallist from the J16 pair at NSR, a race which was won by only just over two tenths. This pair jumped into the Chester 1st eight at Henley, and although they did not make it past the first day, the experience gained will be valuable. Other crew members Ramsbottom and Clark were in the Ch8+ at NSR which finished 7th in the B final.
York RC
It is hard to judge York’s pace given they did not compete at NSR, nor did they enter a quad at Henley this year. However, they did finish 2nd in this event in 2014 and 2015 behind the Northwich crew, so will want to turn the tables and come out on top this year.
Northwich RC
Winners of the event three times in the last four years, they are no strangers to the course. An 8th place finish in J16 pairs at NSR means they are slower on paper than Chester, but are more of a sculling-based club.
Prediction:
I think Northwich will take another set of tankards from this event home, with the battle for second between King’s Chester and York RC too close to call.
