Chester Long Distance Sculls 2021- J16 Small Boats Roundup

Chester Long Distance Sculls, one of the first races of the year where eager scullers will be enduring a tough 5000m which will hopefully set a marker for the head season to come. Due to Coronavirus and the setbacks it created, the course may seem challenging to many junior scullers, especially as considering the endurance style row- however a good set of results are expected and it will be an exciting race to set the season off with.

J16 1x

A very small category consisting of only 3 scullers, 2 of which are from QPHS and one double rowing for Grosvenor RC. Having recently rowed a short race in a double for Grosvenor RC at Warrington Regatta, Oliver Harris will be put to the challenge that the River Dee holds this Sunday. With all three scullers cruising on relatively familiar water, this could be a call for an even more competitive category.

WJ16 1x

This year, King’s Chester School Rowing Club dominates this category with 10 of their scullers out of 12 racing this weekend. With KCS rowing on familiar water and having a larger set of entrees, this event may well be won over. However they are also competing against scullers from Agecroft RC and Nottingham and Union. With KCS’ experience last year in their octos and doubles in the National Sculling Regatta, it will be interesting to see what will unfold when the scullers are reduced down to smaller boats.

J16 2x

Again, another small category with only 2 entrees but nonetheless still just as plentiful in competitiveness. ‘Tolley’ from Nottingham and Union reached the semi finals in his single in his J15 year where hopefully he can translate this success into his double this weekend. However, competing against his crew will be Lewis’ double (QPHS) rowing on local water and with both clubs producing skilled scullers, this race will be all to play for.

WJ16 2x

The W16 2x category has three entries from QPH, KCS and Grosvenor RC which will be thrilling to watch considering any position is up for grabs. While it is very difficult to comment on how well each crew will do this season due to most junior teams having few results this year, it will create a much more exciting atmosphere. Nottingham and Union’s scullers having won a bronze medal in the British Rowing Masters Championships in an octo last year will be reduced down to their singles and put to the test in this challenging race, whereas the KCS scullers, having more familiarity with the course may have the upper hand.
