Due to supplementary entries still being open, JRN does not have the official draw for Christmas Regatta 2024; however, here are some crews which, based on past performances and current information, we expect to enter and perform well in this event.
Following close finishes across the field at the previous KRI Club Regatta, this event is set to bring strong racing within a very competitive field. Two clubs in particular stand out here: St George’s Rowing Club and Whakatane Rowing Club.
St George’s Rowing Club
A strong performance by Nathan Strachan from the St George’s Rowing Club saw them place first in this event at the KRI Club Regatta, as well as fourth and fifth from their ‘B’ and ‘C’ crews: Frank Ison and Xavier Warren. Crucially, Strachan’s performance took a decisive win over his competitor from Whakatane: Travis Talpos. With the club showing the depth of talent lying in their scullers, the St George’s will be hard to overlook coming into this event.
Whakatane Rowing Club
Following strong performances in the single, double and quad, it would be foolish to overlook Travis Talpos out of the Whakatane Rowing Club. Dominant in recent years in the sculling events, Talpos will be looking to extend his victories into the single scull, especially as we approach the business end of the season. And less than two seconds off the top step of the podium, its a very closable gap.
Another sculler to watch out for would be Ash Schutz, following a win in the double with his partner Talpos, and a third place in this event. Not only that, but with a fifth-place result at the Aon Maadi Regatta in the boy’s U17 single, as well as a second-place finish in the U16 single, Schutz will no doubt be looking to close the margin from the previous regatta between him and his partner.
Predictions
With the depth of talent evident in both St George’s Rowing Club and Whakatane Rowing Club scullers, there is sure to be strong competition within both squads. From the previous regatta’s results, it is likely that Talpos and Strachan will be fighting for first place, while Schutz battles the St George’s rowers who were not far off him at the KRI Club Regatta, though, of course, this early in the season, things can change quickly.
