Devil’s Elbow Rowing Club

When the assignments for our series of less documented rowing clubs came out, I was decidedly intrigued when I saw the name of the club I was writing a profile on — ‘Devil’s Elbow’ is certainly not a pairing of words I’d hear every day. With any luck you’ll be as curious as me, so I’ll get into it without further theatrics.

Devil’s Elbow Rowing Club — situated in Long Eaton, between Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, and Derbyshire — is a fairly small, new, club with around 60 members. It was established in 2011. Their junior squad is still under development, with a small group of dedicated J14-17s. For this reason, there has been little report on them racing, but I’m sure in time we’ll see more from their juniors.

In terms of training, the multiple lockdowns have no doubt had an effect. As of late, they have been allowing outings in singles and doubles but without official training sessions. This sounds considerably better than some clubs who have just been on home training. This could be a benefit in the future, especially for the developing younger squads.

Though obviously there is little news to be reported in terms of racing, in January the club hosted the army rowing development squad for training, which I found especially unique and interesting. In addition, unlike most clubs they boast an ‘explorer’ squad, who notably rowed at the Vogalonga Regatta in Venice. This is certainly something not shared by all clubs, and definitely fulfilled my intrigue I had originally held over the name.
