Durham City Regatta 2019 – Men’s Junior 16 Events

Durham City Regatta occurs two weeks prior to the National Schools’ Regatta, and hence we expect to see some of the Northern NSR combinations having a hit out, and who did not want to travel to Nottingham. Saturday racing features racing over 700m, whereas the Sunday has a shorter 500m. Although arguably not the best preparation for NSR, it allows crews to gauge speed locally, as well as valuable course experience for “The Henley of the North”, where some Championship events are run over 1800m, and have the joy of Elvet bridge. Nevertheless, here are the J16 entries for this week.

Saturday

J16 4x-

Only three events here, one from Durham School, one from Durham ARC (DARC) and one from Yarm School. First round is YSBC vs DARC, which I expect YSBC to win, however they will lose out to Durham s=School in the final.

J16 2x

Seven entries here, I expect the semi finals to be Talkin Tarn vs TTA/DUS, and YSBC vs CLS/QEHS. From here, I expect TTA/DUS and YSBC to get to the final, and then the DUS/TTA to win, however all races will be extremely tight and will be good to watch.

J16 1x

Nine entries, so should be particularly hot racing here. I think the heat between Norton of Yarm and Mushens of DUS will be the deciding race, however, they could face a challenge from Norman from Talkin Tarn. Many names entered which I cannot find any data for, so the competition is far from over.

Sunday

J16 2x

Only three entries here, starting with a semi final from Durham School and a Durham School and Talkin Tarn, and the composite should win this to reach Yarm in the final. The winner fromm the Saturday should have a very good chance here.

J16 1x

As on Saturday, Norton, Norman and Mushens all are competing, and all have a very good chance of winning, however Norton as a lightweight may have an advantage over the shorter distance, however Norman and Mushens both have one less race, so it is all to play for.
