Durham SBH is one of the most popular events in the north so the River Wear will be packed. The 1800m course is a tricky one to steer, so there will be a lot of pressure on the bowmen for this event. The Elvet bridge and its narrow arches will be tough for the crews to navigate.
Tyne ARC
Tyne ARC have had some decent results in the single and the double at Berwick and Durham LDS. This shows that they have the brawn to prevail, but do they have the skill to master the J18 4x-? The flexuous course may be a cause for concern for this squad, especially given their lack of experience in this category.
Queen Elizabeth HS BC
QE raced well in the unopposed J17 4x- event at Durham LDS with a strong time, albeit just behind the Durham ARC J16 4x-. They also triumphed at Tyne LDS in the same event, this time beating the Durham ARC squad. This event shall therefore have its own battle within it; between QEHS and Durham.
George Watson’s College RC
Watson’s placed second at Rutherford Head in the J18 8+, beating QEHS, Yarm School and Durham ARC. Therefore, they will be confident coming into this race. However, without a coxswain they could find the course onerous. Watson’s look to be the favourites for this event because of their dominating performance at Rutherford.
Yarm School BC
After entering a scratch crew into Rutherford Head, Yarm School will have hopefully prepared for this event extensively. They made it to the Friday of the Fawley at last year’s Henley Royal Regatta and therefore should be able to rally up a squad to perform well in this event.
Durham ARC
After a to and fro with QEHS in two of the Northern Rowing LDS’, Durham will have their sights narrowed to a place above this.
