Durham Small Boats Head 2019 – Women’s Junior 18 Singles

The category for this weekend consists of six clubs each of which compete against each other on a regular basis, the only usual club missing from the pack is Durham School BC who seem to be giving this weekend a miss. Last year this event was won by Chester-le Street but who will be the champion of this years 1800m course down the River Wear?

Chester-le Street seem to have a strong sculler, Dowson, who has been competing at a number of local events lately. Taking 2nd place at South Hylton Long Distance Sculls back in November should give her a boost of confidence this weekend against the other girls in the category.

Rowntree from Talkin Tarn Amateur Rowing Club also seems to be a competent single sculler with a 3rd place finish at Tyne Long Distance Sculls recently. The preview to this event believed she may lack experience but she went on to prove us wrong.

Yarm School Boat Club saw a second place finish last year, which could potentially move to a 1st this year with the experience of Hazel Wake.
Back in 2016, she came 1st in the single scull at Durham Regatta, and in 2018 rowed in the women’s quad which won at Tees Regatta, as well as last summer competing in the British Junior Rowing Championships against some of the toughest competition for her age category. It is needless to say she has experience in a single but will she pull through this weekend?

Sunderland City Boat Club have been on the scene this autumn but with no significant results. It will be interesting to see how Beech fairs with the strength of other scullers within the category.

Tyne United Rowing Club are known within the north to produce rowers with a strong mentality on top of physical strength. They often compete at a large number of events so there is no fear that a lack of experience will let them down. Over the past few months there haven’t been producing the level of results we would normally expect to see, however as we break into spring maybe we will see them finishing in some of the top places.
