Durham Small Boats Head 2025 – Women’s Junior 16 Quads Preview

As the first month of 2025 draws to a close over 500 crews will take to the River Wear in Durham hoping for a much less windy race after the last race at Tyne New Years Head last weekend.

George Watsons College

As the first Women’s Junior 16 coxless quads to set off over the four divisions, Clements from George Watsons College are sure to set the pace for the other crews. Clements seems to be a strong crew as one of the crew members seems to have had some notable national finishes this year. As a Junior 14, Clements came in the A-final of the National Scottish Championships in a single, then again at the British Rowing Junior Championships in a Women’s Junior 15 doubles. This shows the calibre of all of the athletes in this crew and what they could achieve this weekend.

Hexham Rowing Club

Longlands from Hexham Rowing Club have already had successes over the last few years. Last season they won the Women’s Junior 15 coxed fours category at Hexham Regatta. Their success carried on into the summer where at the British Rowing Junior Championships they placed in the C-final. A notable performance which is sure to land them in the top few contenders for this race!

George Heriot’s School Rowing Club

George Heriot’s School Rowing Club have multiple crews entered into this race. Hopefully, this will make the racing twice as exciting as the intra-club rivalry will be great. As these crews train together weekly will they already know which boat is the fastest and will this spur on the other crews to row to the best of their abilities and possibly turn the tables?

Yarm School Boat Club

Turnbull from Yarm School Club is yet another crew to watch out for on the wear this weekend. This boat has already shown that it is an incredibly fast crew after racing at the National School’s Regatta in May. Being able to race at such a high level shows that this crew is 100% able to take the win in this category this weekend!

St Peters School Boat Club

Britton is yet another crew containing athletes with notable national performances. Britton from St Peters School Rowing Club competed in the National Indoor Rowing Championships, placing 18th out of 44 competitors, including athletes from other crews mentioned above. This crew will surely bring thrilling racing to competitors and spectators as they storm down the River Wear!

Predictions

All of the crews in this race show signs of being able to take home gold on the Wear, and their previous performances back up their claims to the win. I think the George Watsons College crew will be the fastest and win this category. Closely followed by Longlands from Hexham Rowing Club, and the third place crew, I think, will be Turnbull from Yarm School Boat Club.
