Edinburgh University Boat Club

Edinburgh University is located in the beautiful historic city of Edinburgh, with its famous festival and cobbled streets it is a great city to be in. If you’re interested in rowing, then it’s even better as the university is home to one of only six high performance university programmes in the UK, and has state of the art facilities and equipment. Established in 1867, the club used to be solely based in the city, rowing on the canal out of a boathouse in the south-west of Edinburgh. These days, that boathouse is used to train novices and for learn to row sessions, as well as their recreational squad. For the other members, they have to go a little further afield to row, going all the way to Strathclyde’s man-made lake outside of Glasgow. Strathclyde is a 2km stretch of water, and it hosts the British Rowing Championships (both senior and junior) every four years and the Scottish Champs every year. With its 6 lane regatta course set up, it is an ideal training ground for the squad and prepares them very well for regattas like BUCS and national championships.

EUBC has an emphasis on both sweep and sculling, leading their squads to be very well rounded. Due to the high performance nature of some of the students, they have very strong representation and U23s from both men and women. The women’s squad is the largest at the club and boasts a very impressive reputation, most recently they came home with the Victor Ludorum from BUCs, beating their close rivals Newcastle. They have also competed at Henley Women’s Regatta, they are the current reigning winners of the championship coxed four- having won it in 2019. The men’s senior division is no different, with an impressive win in the Prince Albert cup in 2016 making them the first, and still the only, Scottish University to win at Henley Royal. The success doesn’t just stop with the senior section, both the men and women novice teams are also very competitive with wins in the novice categories at BUCs and also they have competed at races such as Henley Womens. The impressive feat of not only having a formidable senior section but also a prosperous novice section certainly works in the favour of EUBC, they are one of the countries most successful university clubs as a result.

The club benefits from a full team of dedicated coaches and impressive facilities, they are currently in the process of building a brand new boathouse at Strathclyde. In addition to this new boathouse they have the old one at the site on the canal in the city, gym facilities that include the aptly named Dame Katherine Grainger rowing gym which houses the small army of ergos they use and they have access to all the other benefits of an excellent university gym. As rowing begins to start up again, it will be fantastic to see what EUBC can pull out of the bag this year.
