Although Radley seem to have entered as three somewhat matched crews, I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up racing in ranked crews. If this is the case, the Radley top four will be very strong and will certainly contend for the win. They have talent in the form of a number of coupe/JWRC athletes and have proved their speed at a number of regattas this season, including at the Head of the Charles Regatta in the USA where their top four placed second. There is no question in my mind that these fours will be fast.
It seems as if the top Eton athletes will be racing in quads, so these fours will probably be made up of some of the younger, less experienced J17s. Having said that, we know that Eton’s J17 are a very capable bunch. A number of these boys probably come from the J16 winning Ch8+ and are already very skilled oarsmen. I’d like to think that some of these Etonian boats will challenge for the top spots.
The top four Paulines also seem to be racing in quads, so this won’t be their fastest four. Regardless, this four should still be able to contend for the win. The athletes and cox all hail from last year’s NSR winning eight and are all pretty experienced, overall. I’m sure they’d love to win the event but I struggle seeing them beating a top Radley four.
We know that Shrewsbury have lost most of their top end athletes (Matt Rowe, Barney Fox etc…) so It’ll be interesting to see how they perform. Shrewsbury consistently put out fasts boats, so I’d be surprised if this crew were off the pace. An experienced cox in the form of T. Shiels should help their cause.
