Sir William Perkins’ School RC
SWP juniors have steadily been doing well for some time. Previously winning medals at both National Schools Regatta and Schools Head, the squad’s most recent challenge was rowing at Henley Royal Regatta. The school has frequently produced international medalists from both the J16 and J18 squads, and with a newly refurbished boathouse, are looking to uphold this success. Members of both quads entered have been successful at recent regattas, with wins at both Reading Small Boats Head and Kingston Borough Regatta in quads, doubles and single sculls. It will be interesting to see how these crews do against strong competition.
Maidenhead RC
The Maidenhead junior squad has been doing fairly well in recent races, taking home medals from multiple regattas over the past season. The crew entered has previously raced together at Wallingford Long Distance Sculls, gaining a good time but missing out on medals. Despite this, one crew member, Sinnott, raced in both WJ15 2x, taking silver, and WJ15 4x, taking gold, at last year’s British Championships, and another, Hollis, also raced at Brit Champs. Maidenhead’s juniors seem to have started this season well, so it will be interesting to see how they do here.
Headington School
Headington has long been established as one of the best rowing schools in the country. In the last season, the 1st VIII won the triple crown at Schools Head, National Schools Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta for the fourth year running, demonstrating the school’s ability to produce top class towers. With two crews entered, Headington School is clearly prepared for the season and looking for a win. The quad comprising of Lockheart, Curtis, Parrott and Grainger was the fastest women’s quad at Wallingford Long Distance Sculls, winning their event. Parrott is also a record holder for the WJ15 1x at Evesham Rowing Club Head of the River. Two members of the second quad entered have also been successful at the Evesham Head of the River, holding the record for the WJ18 4x category. I would place Headington as one of the strongest crews in the draw, so it will be exciting to see how the competition hots up.
Cantabrigian RC
The junior women’s quad of Thornton-Swan, Hill, Ritchie and McBride is another crew which looks as if it could do well in this race. The crew raced at Henley last year, and though they didn’t win any medals, received a very respectable time, beating competitors which included the Sir William Perkins’ School 4x. In addition to this, three of the crew members won their race in the quad at this year’s Henley Women’s Regatta, beating the Tideway Scullers crew and taking gold. It looks as if this racing has set them in good stead for the coming race.
