Henley RC were firm favourites going into this event and they certainly didn’t disappoint with their performance, leaving no other crew even within touching distance with a substantial 45 second margin over the 2nd place finishers from Marlow RC. They also finished with the joint 6th fastest time in women’s quads of the day; an impressive performance from a junior crew. There was, perhaps, a lot of talk last year of Henley overturning the force that is Headington School, and whilst the girls from Oxford will certainly be gaining in speed throughout the season, Henley’s early season form looks to be very promising. Headington finished a respectable 5th, but this wouldn’t be a result to match the expectations set by their usual dominant performances, Henley’s 2nd quad also deserve a mention, finishing with the 4th fastest time (racing TO), showing their characteristic depth even at this early stage, especially considering these girls would be just behind their top 8 athletes who won both junior categories between them.
It is worth noting Latymer Upper’s WU23.4x entry would’ve just pipped Marlow to second place had they raced in this category; they might be disappointed to see the margin behind Henley, but a solid performance nonetheless. Sir William Perkin’s completed the top 3, with a very good scull, proving they have really built on from last season and may be one to keep an eye out for challenging the bigger names later this year. Similarly, the younger girls from Tideway Scullers did an excellent job at their first crack at the J18 age group and we will hopefully see them, too, developing as the year goes on.
