Held along the Tideway between Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridge, Fours Head is the feature head race for quads, coxed fours and coxless fours of the year. The coxless quad event has the largest entry of the Women’s Club category with 28 crews which should hopefully make for some exciting racing. Below are some of the stand out crews from the draw racing along the 6.8km stretch this weekend fighting for the top spot.
Upper Thames RC
Being one of the only clubs to enter two crews into this event the two quads from Upper Thames RC could be set to stir up a storm this weekend. Their large entry into the even, gests the strength within the squad- especially that of their sculling programme which will be pivotal across such a long course.
Marlow RC
The crew from Marlow RC will be going into this weekend’s race backed up by the long-standing reputation of the club producing competitive crews. The strength within Marlow’s Women’s rowing is clearly shown by the number of crews they were able to qualify for Henley Women’s Regatta in 2021 with 9 crews making it to the course. If this is any indication it shows their collective force as a club and so it would not be surprising to see them near the top of the results.
Star Club
One of the more up and coming clubs on the circuit, the strength of Star Club’s programme and performances have been rapidly growing over the last few years dominating local events. Furthermore, the strength of this squad is also shown by one of their coaches – Miriam Taylor- being shortlisted for the UK coaching Hero Awards which indicates the high standard environment that has been established at Star Club.
Molesey BC
Recognised as a High-Performance Programme by British Rowing, Molesey BC is known for putting out competitive crews and athletes into the rowing circuit. Additionally, with the crew racing this weekend training just upstream of the course it will give them vital experience in managing the conditions of the river which over a course of this length will be vital in finding the fastest line in the stream and producing a quick time.
Sudbury RC
Another club with multiple entries is Sudbury RC of whom as a club recently competed along this stretch for Scullers Head of the River giving them some sort of insight into the potential conditions to expect going into the race. The club had recent success at Norfolk Sculls Head with five winning crews coming from the club between their men’s, women and junior squad. This potentially indicates the strength within the club and its coaching to produce strong crews- especially within sculling crews so it will be exciting to see if they are able to make a successful transition into this national event on a larger stage.
Prediction
With so many different clubs racing from all over the UK this weekend it makes it hard to pin down a favourite with so many clubs in contention for the top spot. Furthermore, with minimal information available about the individual athletes within the crew’s it adds a further element of mystery and excitement over who will come out on top of this exciting event.
