It’s that time of year again, Fours Head is back on the Tideway to showcase the country’s best women’s academic quads for the start of the 2022/23 head season. With nine entries in this years event, this academic quads race is looking like it will be a close one.
Reading University BC
This all-sculling university won this event last year and it’a no surprise to see multiple entries in it again with three. This season they’ll set out to hold onto their status as the place to be for sculling for and will be wanting to show off the depth of their women’s squad for the 22/23 season. Their top boat is in the championship category, however, where others may have top boats this event. With a pedigree as strong as Reading though, even their second boat has a good chance of doing well here.
Imperial College London BC
Home water to Imperial College, they will have the advantage of knowing the best line to steer down the Tideway. With Imperial producing an athlete in the U23 GB squad last season the university will be looking to step on as a whole and try to win an event at Fours Head. The club has faltered in the last couple of years, competing in the shadows of their rivals, UL, who have gone from strength to strength, particularly on the women’s side. Will this be the year that Imperial strike back?
Nottingham University BC
Having produced some good sculling results last season Nottingham University will be looking to get a good result in this event especially with BUCS Head coming up next month. They’re a club that can always do well at events like this, depending on where this crew sits in their squad ranking, it could be a strong contender.
Prediction
If I would predict who will win this event it would Reading University closely followed by Imperial College. However don’t write off Exeter or Surrey as they could come close to being in the top three as well.
