On Saturday 19th November, 42 Women’s School/Junior Quads will be racing down the
championship course. Gaining beneficial experience within a fantastic racing atmosphere,
each crew will look forward to making the most of every stroke and ensuring they make
their mark early in the season. Now around two months into the season, crews will be
becoming more established and producing the competitive speed necessary for this
historical race. Therefore, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top and takes home
the first-place title.
Henley Rowing Club
First off the start is Henley Rowing Club who will certainly be the ones to watch thanks to
their win at the previous 2021 Fours Head. They took the win by 11.1 seconds, in 20 minutes
and 28.5 seconds and will be hoping to build on their performance even further this year.
The Henley squad is often connoted with their success within sweep due to their wins at the
2022 National Schools’ Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta. As a result, it will be intriguing
to see if they can be just as successful within the discipline of sculling.
Wycliffe Junior Rowing Club
Taking home golds at the recent Nottingham Autumn Head, Pairs Head and Scullers Head,
Wycliffe has made a strong start to the season. Chasing Henley down the 6.8km course,
they will raise the bar of competition and also have a firm chance of coming away with the
win.
Tideway Scullers School
Featuring World Championship bronze medallist McCarthy and her Head of the Charles
double partner Harvey, the quad from TSS is full of accomplished scullers ready for a close
and competitive race. The tideway girls put in a fantastic performance at this year’s Henley
Royal Regatta, making it to Friday when they were knocked out by the triumphant Redwood
Scullers Crew. This breadth of experience against the highest level of quads will definitely
set them up well for the upcoming Fours Head.
Marlow Rowing Club
In 2021, Marlow’s Junior Women’s Quad came away with second place at Fours Head and
are another crew to add to the list of potential winners. Their win at National Schools’
Regatta supplies them with calm confidence in their ability to put down a successful
performance. Not only do they present ability on a 2km course but also over a longer
distance, placing 2nd at the 2022 Schools Head of the River Race. They are definitely another
crew to watch out for.
Others
Other honourable mentions go to Henley Royal Regatta champions, Claire’s Court and
Schools Head of the River Race bronze medallists, Molesey Boat Club. The continuously
successful Shiplake College, Kingston Grammar School and Surbiton High School also have
a plethora of talented juniors who will be storming towards the finish line.
Predictions
This weekend is a race packed with formidable competitors and all will come away with another experience to take forward into the season. Predictions are tough to make but it appears that Henley, Wycliffe, Tideway Scullers and Marlow will be the quads likely to fight it out for gold. We wish each of the 42 Women’s School/Junior Quads the best of luck and look forward to some exciting outcomes.
