Whilst girls pairs entries aren’t being made until later today, based off the singles entries these are some of the girls trialling for sweep who we’re expecting to put out top performances this weekend.
Katy Claridge- Marlow RC- Bow side
Whilst she didn’t qualify for the potentials camp in Spain in December, Katy has posted both strong ergs and singles results so far this season. Throughout last year Marlow have been performing well in a number of boat classes, and I’d therefore expect a strong result in the pairs this weekend.
Ella Morgan- Henley RC- Bow side
Since last year Ella has switched from sculling to sweep, and despite not having the strongest erg scores, she managed to come 2nd in the doubles with Lottie Orr at Feb trials last year. Whilst this didn’t lead to any GB selection come summer, with a silver NSR medal in coxless fours and a win at Fours Head in coxed fours, as well as finishing close behind LEH triallists in the pairs at Hampton Head, she’ll most likely be aiming for another result as good as last years.
Mary Wright- Henley RC- Stroke side
Whilst Mary has mostly seems to have sculled this year, with a good ranking in the singles at EID as well as some strong erg scores, Mary will most likely still excel at sweep, especially considering last year’s Henley J16 eight’s performances, and I’d expect a strong showing from her this weekend.
Celia Matthews – LEH – Stroke side
Despite not having a particularly strong ergo, Celia was selected for Coupe last year as a J16, winning three golds for GB in the eight and pair. This season, her single placed in the top 10 at November trials and she was subsequently invited to attend a GB training camp in Spain in December. This should set her up for a good performance this weekend and I expect Celia to rank highly in both the singles time trial on Saturday and the pairs’ on Sunday.
Flo Donald – Lea RC – Bow side
Flo is another athlete returning from racing at Coupe last year, and will be looking to put in a solid performance this weekend to make her mark in sweep this season. Although Flo’s single was not exceptionally fast in November, it is clear that sweep is her preferred discipline and as she also attended the Spain potentials camp, will be among the top finishers, certainly in Sunday’s crew boats.
Claudia Turley – Tyne RC – Stroke side
After a slightly substandard performance at November trials, Claudia was invited on the Spain training camp, which is likely to have led to great development in her sweep style. Claudia performed very well in the first 2k of the season and I expect to see more strong scores from her later this year. However, it will be vital that she gets in a decent time in the 1x in order to secure a strong partner for the next days racing. If she can do this, I have no doubt that Claudia will be up there in the top few crews.
Some more people worth mentioning may be Clare Jackson from LEH who also finished 1st with Celia at Hampton Head and Issy Jonsson from Henley RC who finished just a couple of seconds behind them.
