This February trials sees plenty of girls coming back to the water to show what they’ve got. For this time round, the ladies wanted to pursue sweep trials are able to do so in a pair, meaning that for the ones pursuing sculling trials, its a lot less busy. Twenty-five women will take to the water in their single for senior selection. All are very strong contenders, with a few already being on the Great Britain team.
Hannah Scott (Bann RC / Leander Club)
Hannah Scott of Bann RC and Leander Club raced as part of the Women’s Quad at the Tokyo Olympics and went solo in 2022 picking up some strong results in her single at international level. She came a strong third at previous Wingfield Sculls event along with plenty of other wins along the way. Scott will be a strong contender for the first spot after her strong finish at February Trials this time last year.
Lola Anderson (Leander Club)
Another strong name to mention is Lola Anderson of Leander Club. Having won The Princess Royal Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta, it is quite obvious that this talent is one to keep an eye out for. Knowing her way around a race course, Lola will be in one of the top spots for this set of trials racing.
Saskia Budgett & Kyra Edwards (Tideway Scullers School & Nottingham RC)
From Tideway Scullers School we have Saskia Budgett. Currently in the senior women’s squad for Great Britain, she has been in a double with her partner Kyra Edwards from Nottingham Rowing Club, who is also trialling. These two have put down plenty of good runs together over a plethora of international races over this past year. Although for this race, they are going head to head.
Others
Also to note appearances, in no particular order, such as Jess Leyden (Leander Club), Georgie Brayshaw (Leander Club), Perri McCluskey (Strathclyde Park Rowing Club), Kathryn Mole (University of Birmingham Rowing Club), and Lucy Glover (Warrington Rowing Club and Edinburgh University Boat Club). All of these ladies have seen international competition if not come home with a medal to prove it.
Prediction
Every one of these ladies will be incredibly strong both mentally and physically to post such quick erg scores and water scores. The head racing format will require that of whoever wants the top spots.
Not only will they all be keen to perform well for international selection for the 2023 regatta season, but they will all definitely have their eye on the Paris 2024 Olympics. Whatever their desires for crew selection, it’ll produce some quick results and it’ll be exciting to keep an eye on. Best of luck!
