With this years women’s trials being slightly different to previous years, we have both sweep and sculling hopefuls up against each other on the water all in singles. However, we will still be predicting them as two separate entries. With a strong list of both seniors, this years November trails will produce some strong results, with all girls determined to nab a Great Britain vest.
Jess Leyden (Leander Club)
Representing Leander Club, Jess has this past season come fourth at World Cup I, silver at World Cup III and gold at European Championships all in the Women’s Quad Sculls. She also doubled up with Lucy Glover to bag a bronze at World Cup I. Jess has had a strong rowing career and will only be building on this momentum to perform well and get selected for another season.
Georgie Brayshaw (Leander Club)
Also representing Leander Club, Georgie was alongside Jess in the Women’s Quad at World Cup I and at World Cup III, along with taking gold at the European Championships. Georgie doubled up with Lola Anderson to race the double also at World Cup I and came fourth. Georgie has completed her first year as part of the national squad and will be aiming to keep the spot and show how important she is to crew selection.
Saskia Budgett (Tideway Scullers School)
From Tideway Scullers School, Saskia managed to get out in Tokyo for the Olympics, she’ll be keen to keep up with the squad and continue onto the next set of international races. After a strong fifth at European Championships in the double with Kyra Edwards, she’ll only be keen to get more and perform well.
Kyra Edwards (Nottingham RC)
As mentioned, Kyra doubled up with crewmate and partner, Saskia, to place fifth at European Championships. Kyra has shown that injuries don’t always mean the end of a rowing career and definitely not the end of an international career. She has bounced back and as always show her strength this weekend.
Others
Other big names include Katy Wilkinson-Feller of Tideway Scullers School, Oghenevwairw Obukohwo from Twickenham Rowing Club and Amelia Hempleman-Adams now at Leander Club.
Interestingly, Lola Anderson, Lucy Glover and Hannah Scott are not present at this first trials assessment. Hopefully they will be back into racing for the next instalment.
Prediction
I believe this weekend will prove some interesting racing considering the water conditions on Sunday, this will require skill and experience. Many of the girls racing this weekend will have incredibly quick ergo scores, a majority under seven minutes. I believe on the water Jess will come in first, followed by Saskia and then Georgie. Hopefully everyone will have a stellar racing, we wish you all the best of luck.
