GB Trials 2021/22 – U23 Men’s Sculling (Third Instalment)

This weekend the British Rowing centre at Caversham will play host once again to the final formal water trial for the GB Rowing Team. As a part of this, U23 athletes are able to test themselves against the best this country has to offer as this event doubles up as both U23 and senior trials.

Callum Dixon

Coming off the back of a dominant win at February trials, Callum Dixon will be looking to further cement his position as the top U23 sculler for this season as we move towards the U23 World Championships in Varese, Italy, this summer. Callum is performing at such a high level that he attended the senior GB rowing team camp in Aviz earlier in the year, this trial will offer another opportunity for him prove his worth.

Bryn Ellery

An U23 sculler I could see doing well at final trials is Bryn Ellery. He placed third at February trials and enjoyed a vast amount of success at junior level as a part of the notorious Windsor Boy’s School programme. Bryn won the Fawley Challenge Cup back-to-back in 2017 and 2018 and also won consecutive silvers at the Junior World Championships in the quad in those same years. Bryn will be looking to use this sculling pedigree to put in a strong result this weekend.

Miles Devereux

Another top U23 athlete is Miles Devereux, he finished second in the U23 single behind Callum Dixon at February trials and is part of an immensely strong Oxford Brookes programme. He raced in the Junior Men’s Quad at the Junior World Championships in 2019 and finished third at Head of the River this year stroking the Oxford Brookes second eight. It’ll be interesting to see how Miles will stack up against not only his fellow U23 trialists but also the senior scullers.

Joseph Adamson

Joseph Adamson is another extremely strong U23 trialist, he raced the Junior Men’s Double at the Junior World Championships in 2018 and has had a strong university rowing career racing for Newcastle University. Highlights of which include reaching the final of the Prince Albert Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta last year and winning Men’s Championship Quads at BUCS Regatta. He is definitely someone I could see putting in a big performance to finish towards the top of the time sheets.

Prediction

I can’t see anyone getting the best of Callum Dixon at final trials, however I think after first place it’s open to a number of scullers. If I had to chose I would say Miles Devereux will finish second, followed by Bryn Ellery and then Joseph Adamson in fourth.
