As the clubs gear up for what will be for most their final race before WEHORR, all women’s eights will be looking to put in strong performances and gain that mental edge over their rivals. This year the category is smaller than last year but has a good mix of club and university crews vying for top spot.
University of London BC
University of London have two crews entered in Championship Eights, a good indicator of the depth of their women’s squad. UL have had a bit of a mixed season so far, with a good performance at Quintin but mixed results in some of their local fixtures. However, they’ll see Hammersmith Head as an opportunity to be competitive and get a good race in before WEHORR.
London RC
London RC came second in Championship Eights in 2022 behind Vesta, who have not fielded a crew in this category this year. They’ll be aiming to do one place better but will have to see off fellow Tideway club UL who beat them in Quintin Head earlier this year. As with UL, it’s great to see London enter two crews for this category.
Lea RC
British Rowing Club of the Year 2022 Lea has entered a boat in this category. This crew came second in Quintin Head but in the women’s senior category rather than championship, so this will be a step up for them if they want to compete with the Tideway clubs while staying ahead of the rest of the field.
Prediction
This category looks set to be an all-London affair for the top spots, with UL going in as the favourites. However, London should push them hard, and the battle for third spot between both London and UL’s ‘B’ crews and the likes of Lea and Exeter University should make it an interesting category all round.
