To say that the Open 1x is a sparsely populated field would be the understatement of the century. Having a grand total of two competitors may seem like a boring prospect, but once you take a glance at the calibre of the two clubs that are competing in this category, you will see just how competitive this race will be.
On the Middlesex Bank, competing for St Paul’s School Boat Club is A. Tobelem. Although a relatively unknown quantity in this event, the very fact that Tobelem competes as part of arguably one of the most successful school boat clubs in the country under Bobby Thatcher, speaks volumes about his potential in this event. On the Surrey station, fighting for the pride of local sculling giants, Tideway Scullers School is Hewitt. Both rowers will be relatively familiar with this stretch of water, both belonging to clubs that use the Tideway regularly. Both come from clubs with rich recent success in multiple events. The question is: who will be able to utilise this to their advantage more effectivley?
Prediction: Too close to call, but given TSS’s proficiency in sculling, Hewitt may have a slight edge.
