Dulwich college have entered 3 crews. Dulwich are always up there fighting for medals in the Child Beale and so I’d expect them to be competitive in this event, especially if they put out a top four. They have talent in the form of Patrick Craig, who was selected to attend the GB winter camp in Spain.
Likewise, Oratory school also sent one of their athletes (Kibble) to the GB winter training camp. Although they are not as consistent as Dulwich in terms of performance, I see no reason, to suggest that they couldn’t compete this weekend.
This Hampton crew is certainly one to watch. The crew is entered under “Davis”, who rowed in their first 8 last year, and their gold-medal winning J16 8 the year before. Davis is only one of 7 returners from last years crew and so I would expect them to win the event.
KCS have entered two coxed fours this weekend. The names suggest that these are probably boys from their 1st 8. KCS’ current J18s have always been strong, and have some good results behind them. They performed well at the recent Quintin Head beating the likes of Latymer, Reading Blue Coat and one of Radley’s matched 8s.
It’s sometimes harder to predict how well club crews will do year on year, seeing as they often have a much more limited pool of athletes to choose from. Having said this, Kingston rowing club have produced a number of very good junior athletes in the past. Recent examples include Matthew Rowe, Cameron Spurling and Scott Cockle (cox) who all began their rowing careers at KRC and have gone on to win a number of Coupe and Junior worlds medals.
Winchester have been improving in recent years, but lost most of last year’s 8, the only survivor being their cox. It’ll be interesting to see whether some of their younger athletes can rise to the challenge and fill their predecessors’ shoes.
Having said this, races are won on the day and so I wouldn’t discount GMS, Kingston grammar or Canford.
