Hampton Head 2024 – Open Junior 16 Eights Preview

Hampton Head stands out from the other head races with its iconic 3000-metre course downstream from Sunbury Lock. This unorthodox distance creates a unique racing experience for the competitors, as the 3k poses a planning challenge that not many have prepared for. Provided that it is a large race, the J16 8+ division is surprisingly small, with only eight entries. However, this is not going to take away from the excitement that this division has to offer, as some strong crews are boating this Saturday.

Westminster School BC

Given the lack of results from this particular division, predicting the outcome of this event is a challenging task. Nonetheless, Westminster consistently emerges as a formidable force, particularly in the eights division. Their impressive performance at the National Schools’ Regatta, securing a commendable third place in the A-final, positions them favourably to attain a first-place win with considerable ease.

King’s College School BC

King’s College School is a prominent name in this category across various age groups. Attaining second place in the B-final at the National Schools’ Regatta is a decent achievement, indicating that the crew possesses the essential capabilities to vie for the top position on Saturday.

Hampton School BC

Given their familiarity with the home course, Hampton possesses a clear advantage, as they are well-acquainted with every little detail of it, likely enabling them to navigate it more effectively than the other boats in this division. Moreover, with their impressive performance last year, achieving third place in the B-final of the National Schools’ Regatta, combined with their comprehensive understanding of the river here, it is indisputable that Hampton will emerge as a strong contender for the gold medal in this event.

Predictions

Overall, I think that this will be a very close event, simply due to the experience that all of these crews have in high-level racing. However, if I had to pick one crew that stands out to me, it would most definitely be Westminster. This is not to discount Hampton’s potential to contest for the top position in the final results, benefiting from their superior knowledge of the course. While King’s College is expected to provide a strong challenge, their crew’s strength and familiarity with the course may not suffice to secure victory.
