Hampton Small Boats Head 2024 – Women’s Junior 17 Single Sculls Preview

With Scullers Head being canceled earlier this season, the 12 crews entered into Hampton Head’s WJ17 singles will be eager to make their first mark into the first singles race this season. In a race of only 3km there will definitely be some exciting and competitive racing.

Barn Elms Rowing Club

Leading the draw in this event is McDougall from Barn Elms. With a phenomenal seventh place finish at National Schools Regatta in the Women’s Championship Singles, only as a J16, she will be hard to beat. As first in the draw, I am sure she will be aiming to win. The depth of strong single scullers at Barn Elms is showcased by their second entry into this event. Previously at Brentford BC, Rimmer will hope to display her strong sculling skills for her new club.  After not being able to race on their home turf at Scullers Head, the two girls from Barn Elms will want to assert their dominance in this event. .

Claires Court School Boat Club

Also with two entries into this event, Gater and Hobbs have the potential to grab the top spots in this race. Claires Court is a prestigious rowing programme, with very strong female single scullers in their seniors including the J18 Jemimah Donn who made her international debut at Coupe de La Jeunesse during the summer. With role models like Donn to look up to and train with, the girls from Claires Court will be sure to have a good run in this race.

Other entrants

Setting off behind the two girls from Barn Elms, Sangiovanni Vincentelli from Rob Roy Boat Club will be hunting them down. Behind her is then Weddell from Walton Rowing Club, with its strength in junior small boats.

Predictions

For me, the clear winner is Ella McDougall from Barn Elms Rowing Club, because of her wealth of single sculling experience and expertise. I think she will then be followed by fellow teammate Sloane Rimmer. However, with a lack of results, due to race cancellations, it is difficult to predict who will take the next couple spots and it could be anyone’s race to win.
