The Women’s junior single is a very competitive category and this year, as expected, there are entries from a wide range of clubs. The course at Hampton is fairly short, at around 3000m, and considering the fact that it is downstream, there should be some very tight and exciting results. This category features some of this season’s top single rowers and so it will be exciting to see some of them take each other on this weekend. With Early ID Assessments having taken place last weekend, it will be interesting to see how some of those who competed fare when placed against those who didn’t.
Sir William Perkins – Keen
Keen represented Great Britain in the double at the Coupe De La Jeunesse over the summer and picked up a Bronze medal putting her in a very strong position coming into this race, with lots of strong sculling experience under her belt. She finished 2nd at Henley Long Distance Sculls, giving us a good idea of what she is capable of this season although there are few competitors which overlap between the two events.
Headington – Van Onselen
Van Onselen competed in the Headington A eight at National Schools’ Regatta 2018, finishing 2nd to the Henley eight, as well as placing 6th in the Championship quads. Van Onselen represented Great Britain at the Coupe De La Jeunesse over the summer, in both the JW4- and JW8+. She won gold in both these events which places her in a very promising position coming into this race although she appears slightly more experienced and successful in the sweep boats. At Wallingford Long Distance Sculls, she proved her ability finishing 3rd out of 19.
Headington – Grainger
At National Schools’ Regatta, Grainger raced in the Headington B crew eight, placing 1st in the B final. She has already received several results in a single this season including 1st place in the WJ18 1x category at Isis Sculls earlier in September, putting her in a very strong position going into this event. At Wallingford Long Distance Sculls at the end of September, Grainger placed 2nd just ahead of Van Onselen giving us a vague idea of how this category will play out.
Tideway Scullers School – Lack
It is difficult to find many recent results for Lack although her older results indicate that she is a strong sculler with lots of potential. The main example of this can be seen at the February GB Triallists Assessment where she finished 4th in the single and 5th in the double. I imagine we could see a strong result from Lack which will be interesting as it will give us a more up to date comparison to other rowers in her age category.
Sir William Perkins – Taylor
Taylor finished slightly slower in the category at the recent Henley Long Distance Sculls than I imagine she would have hoped but I imagine that this will have spurred her on to push herself to her extremes this weekend especially with the excitement of Early ID assessments in between.
There are 12 other boats entered into this category however, I have previewed those who I feel have the highest likelihood of finishing at the top of the category. I think that the top 3 places will be taken by: SWP-Keen, HED-Grainger and HED-Van Onselen although not necessarily in that order.
