Kingston – Waddington
Waddington came 4th at Nat Schools in J16G 4+ A Final and, assuming her doubles partner was also in this crew, it would have been interesting to see how these girls fared when swapping from sweep to scull. Similarly, a crew under Waddington made it through to the quarter-finals of Women’s Henley J16 4+ back in June and won the WJ16 2x at Hampton SBH last year, showing strong sculling ability from this squad.
Marlow – Newman
Winning the J16 4+ at Women’s’ Henley, we can assume these girls will be quick, however, similarly to the Kingston crew, can they transfer this speed into the smaller boat? A further win, later in the summer, at British Junior Champs in the WJ16 4+ (note their B crew also came 5th in the same event – highlighting a potentially incredibly strong squad), certainly leaves them as a crew to watch. Furthermore, Newman came third at this event in her WJ16 1x last year, leaving her with key knowledge of the course and event.
Surbiton – Mint 8, Mint 9
This club has managed to stay under the radar during the summer season just gone, however, Surbiton crews did place 4th, 7th and 8th in the WJ16 2x category here last year. With no names to these crews, they would have been the ones to keep an eye on.
Walton – Beard
This crew could also have been one to watch. Putting in a solid performance at the recent Pairs Head (rowing up an age group) in the WJ18 2x Senior category, they have demonstrated their apt capability in the double scull.
Predictions
With a close fight between the Kingston and Marlow crews, I think we would have seen Marlow just edge out in front to take the win followed closely by Kingston. We can also expect to have seen Surbiton and Walton to put out quick, contending times, perhaps coming in just behind Kingston and Marlow.
