This is one of the last head races of this calendar year and an excellent way of consolidating the season so far. Unfortunately the weather has no held out but we would have had another exciting day of racing, this category has a lot of clubs with multiple entries so it would have been interesting to see who came out on top.
Putney High School
Putney have been going from strength to strength in the last few seasons and this group of girls i’m sure will be no exception. Bridges was in the coxless quad that won at Fours Head recently and was also part of the eight that made it into the A final at National Schools. This shows the depth of the squad and the potential they have, so these girls will be ones to watch.
Stratford-upon-Avon
The Stratford girls also had a good season last year, Wellstead and Browne came 2nd in the B final in the WJ18 fours at National Championships and also won the B final in the four category at National Schools. I’m sure they will be hoping to build from these results and propel themselves to do one better this season.
Kingston Grammar School
Abbott is the only entry from Kingston and last year she most notably came 15th overall in the Championship singles at Nationals Schools. If she can improve on this result at this race then it looks like the start of a promising rest of the season for her.
Lea
The girls from Lea are often top competitors and I predict this cohort will be no exception. Forde had a strong J16 year with her crews, with the most promising result being a 2nd in the A final of the WJ16 fours at National Junior Championships. If they can build on this these girls will be the ones to look out for.
Prediction
The field was fairly open for this race, with a lot of clubs putting in multiple entries, giving it that extra level of competition. I think that the crews from Putney would have had a good chance, it is a shame we will not find out.
