In comparison to races on the Tideway, Hampton Small Boats Head is a relatively short head race of only 3km. This stretch of the Thames gives crews the perfect opportunity to test their speed and steering. With 10 exciting entries this year, the competition is on to see who can achieve the fastest time of the day.
Lady Eleanor Holles School Boat Club
Having taken first and third place in the WJ18 4- at Kingston Small Boats Head, Lady Eleanor Holles School Boat Club have certainly made their mark so far this season. With second and fourth place at pairs head, these girls are certainly comfortable with showing their strength in the pairs. Will they be able to keep this successful streak on to this Saturday?
Walton Rowing Club
Walton Rowing Club has already taken the season by storm in this category. With wins at both Kingston Small Boats Head and Pairs Head, this pair’s experience is almost unmatched. If they can grapple the narrow Hampton stretch, this crew is looking to be up there with one of the fastest crews in this category.
St George’s College Boat Club
A relatively local club to this stretch of river, will St George’s College Boat Club be able to find themselves in the top spot this weekend? With a successful 4- last season, achieving bronze at National School’s Regatta, can their 2 entries fight it out for further success in the pairs?
Wimbledon High School Boat Club
Wimbledon High School Boat Club has recently shown at Kingston Small Boats Head that their fours seem to have mastered the technique of sweeping. Having entered 2 boats into this category they will be looking to show off the speed they have accumulated in the early parts of this season. However, will these crews be able to transfer this speed into the smaller boats for this weekend’s racing?
Predictions
With the vast talent attending the race this year, it will be hard to pinpoint where the results may lie. With a vast set of crews in this category, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lady Eleanor Holles School Boat Club makes its mark amongst the fastest crews along with possibly St George’s College Boat Club. However, it’s hard to ignore Walton Rowing Club’s immense talent in the pair, so I would place my bets on this crew coming out on top at the end of the day. But surprises aren’t unheard of, so anything could happen!
