Hampton Small Boats Head 2024 – Women’s Junior 18 Singles Preview

With Storm Bert bringing about the cancellation of Fours Head on the Tideway, these 23 scullers will be eager to get racing. They are taking to the calmer, non-tidal Hampton stretch this weekend. The single scull is known by many as the boat that requires the highest level of technical ability and, therefore, one of the hardest to get right. This, combined with the steering of the tight stretch of the Thames, could prove to be the defining factor of who takes the win.

Claires Court School Boat Club

Claires Court School Boat Club have entered two scullers into this event. They are known for their sculling program so I would expect both of their rowers (Donn and Rance) to give a good performance. Donn, who raced in the Coupe de la Jeunesse quad, is a strong contender for the win. She won a silver in The Scullery Regatta and recently came third at Henley Long Distance Sculls in a solid field. Given her expertise in this boat class, I predict she will win.

Kew House School Boat Club

Kew House School Boat Club will be used to the rough conditions on the Tideway, which will only make them stronger in the calm hampton stretch of the Thames. Kew House School Boat Club sent a reserve single to Coupe de la Jeunesse over summer so may be quite proficient in single sculls. They have put out three singles for this weekend: Thurnham, Taylor-Aubrey, and Oliphant. After Thurnham won silver in the eight at the World Rowing Under 19 Championships for GB she will be a strong rower, she has clearly demonstrated her prowess for sweeping but can she scull as well?

Molesey Boat Club

They will be rearing to race on their home stretch, giving them an advantage. They have put forward four singles: Hemming, Griffiths, Snow, and Schioldan. Molesey had a successful season last year. Hemming stroked the National Schools’ Regatta quad and came seventh out of 41 single sculls – only two weeks ago at Kingston Small Boats Head. I believe she will give a good performance on Saturday.

Prediction

Overall I predict Donn from Claires Court School Boat Club will take the win due to her sculling experience and recent promising race results. Hemming from Molesey Boat Club to come second and Thurnham from Kew House School Boat Club to come third. With many members in this field having represented GB at high-level international competitions, we will surely be treated to some tight racing.
