The Head of The Charles Regatta, Boston Massachusetts in October. It’s the largest 3-day regatta in the world, with 11,000 athletes in 1,900 boats in 61 events, projections of 225,000 spectators on the, a three mile course are only some of the numbers that make up this world-renowned regatta. Yearly since 1965, The Head of The Charles brings together the very best Junior Men’s athletes in the America and we are lucky this event also fosters some international talent. With the Fall Weather forecast set on perfect racing conditions, we are bound to see some fast, potentially record-breaking, results this weekend.
The Windsor Boys’ School
Coach Mark Wilkinson trains some 120 student-athletes with the plan of winning every event entered, a feat which despite the odds, he regularly achieves. The Brits will be coming off victory at last year’s competition, and more recently, victory in The Fawley Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. Considering other results, they will be deservedly full of confidence, having entered two boats in HOCR, they intend to dominate the podium.
RowAmerica Rye
They epitomize the essence of competitive junior rowing with a culture of determination and teamwork. Every boat, every race, every athlete. Sweep or scull, RowAmerica Rye is on or near the podium. It will be interesting to see how this crew will face in the rematch for gold with Windsor, one which they lost out on by over 30 seconds in 2023.
Long Beach Junior Club
Fighting to restore West Coast Dominance, Long Beach Junior Club makes the trip from California, and coincidentally the location of The 2028 Summer Olympics, to Boston, focused on boat speed and placing themselves on the HOCR podium. They placed third last year, but finished the season with a fifth place in the B-Final of Youth Nationals. Perhaps the crew is better equipped to tackle the longer distances the Charles offers.
Whitemarsh Boat Club
Head Coach Sean Hall and Assistant Coach Art Post bring years of national and international coaching experience to the club along with location, location, location The Schuylkill River at Conshohocken. The Henley Royal Regatta 2024 trip added to the bank of experience racing at the highest level, after collecting a silver medal at the Youth Nationals 2024 earlier in the summer. While the boys of Whitemarsh fell short in the quater-finals to eventual finalists Marlow Rowing Club, I have no doubt they will able to dominate on home soil.
Maritime Rowing Club
Having placed first in the USRowing Youth National Championships in 2023, Maritime will be hoping to return to the top, having traditionally dominated in sculling. I look forward to seeing what they can produce over three miles this weekend.
Prediction
I don’t think it is unlikely that we see a repeat of last year’s podium: Windsor Boys School followed by RowAmerica Rye, and Long Beach Rowing Club, will all stand excellent chances at repeating or bettering 2023. However, with Los Gatos Rowing Club boasting new blood featuring against returners from Nereid Boat Club and St Catherine’s Rowing Club, I look forward to the potential shake up this weekend.
