Head of the Charles 2023 – Women’s Youth Coxed Quads Preview

Hosted on the Charles River, HOCR is one of the headline races on the US calendar. As the
world’s largest 3-day rowing competition, it is sure to display some fierce talent and the
women’s youth quads are no exception. Within this category, there are a total of 50 crew
battling it out to produce their best performance and we can’t wait to see who comes out
on top.

Redwood Scullers

Redwood Scullers continuously produce some of the strongest youth athletes the US has to
offer. Last summer they took gold at the National Championships in the WU171x and the
WU174x and won silver in the WU194x. They also had representation at this year’s Under
19 World Championships, with two of their scullers making it to a 5th place finish in the
Women’s Quad. The results of Redwood Scullers speak for themselves and they are
definitely the crew to keep an eye on at the upcoming head.

Nereid Boat Club

Another club who have demonstrated their strength of performance at home and abroad is
Nereid Boat Club. At this years National Championships they placed 5 th in the youth 4x, a
crew that would then make it to Thursday of the Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup at Henley
Royal Regatta. Nereid will be biting at the heels of Redwood Scullers as they make their way
down the course and are a crew with the ability to place in the top 5.

Tideway Scullers School

Making their way to Boston all the way from London is the 2023 Diamond Jubilee Challenge
Cup champions, Tideway Scullers School. A strong season of finishing 7th at the National
Schools’ Regatta and making it to the final of Henley Women’s Regatta was topped off f
TSS when they became winners of the illustrious Henley Royal Regatta. They have also
displayed their international ability, with two of their female athletes competing at this
years U19 World Championships. With the continuation of this lucky streak, they could also
be a crew to make it into the top 3.

Los Gatos Rowing Club

Another of the USA’s highest performing clubs is Los Gatos whose women’s youth quad
came away from Youth Nationals with a 4th place finish. The same crew also finished in 2nd in
the Grand Final at the San Diego Crew Classic. Los Gatos are sure to be in the hopes of
building on these performances and coming away with a top 5 result at HOCR.

Oak Neck Rowing Academy

Fighting for their place in the top 3, Oak Neck Academy is another ferocious crew we can
expect big things from at HOCR. Taking bronze in the women’s youth quad at Youth
Nationals and producing this year’s women’s youth single champion, Oak Neck clearly have
the expertise to perform when it counts. Oak Neck has also demonstrated the strength of
its athletes at events like the USRowing National Indoor Championships where one of their female U19 athletes came away with gold. Such results set them up well for the three-mile course as they race for a top position.

Whitemarsh Boat Club

Likely to know their opponents well, Whitemarsh Boat Club was also a top finisher at the
National Championships as they took 7th position. At last years Head of the Charles, they
finished 8th /50, an impressive performance they will aim to build on this year

Predictions

Overall, I would predict that Redwood Scullers will take gold, followed by a battle between
Oak Neck Academy and the Tideway Scullers School. I predict that this top 3 will then be
followed by Los Gatos and Nereid Boat Club. With such a wide range of well accomplished
crews, HOCR will be a fantastic watch and we wish all competitors a successful racing
experience.
